Handley Page Halifax A.9 RT922, 47 Sqn (RAF Fairford) - 13th February 1947
Aircraft was detailed to fly supply drop to farms and villages in the Staffordshire Moorlands area cut off in the bad snows of the winter of 1946/47. In appalling weather, with cloud reportedly down to 100 feet, the aircraft made three attempts to run in on Butterton and drop its cargo. The pilot radioed that he was going around to make his third run and during this maneuver, the Halifax struck high ground between Grindon and Butterton, breaking up as it cartwheeled across the moor, killing all on board.
